Alzheimer's disease genetic risk factors, neuropathology, and cognitive decline in individuals with African ancestry Lead Investigator: Kacie Deters Institution : Stanford E-Mail : kdeters@stanford.edu Proposal ID : 1036 Proposal Description: Recent studies suggest APOE4 and ABCA7 influence cognitive decline differentially between black and white individuals. Furthermore, blacks present with more AD neuropathologies, and more frequently have Lewy body and comorbid pathologies such as vascular, relative to whites. A large portion of the black population is admixed, thus consideration of race as a continuous variable may provide a more relevant prediction of disease status. The goals of the proposed research are to determine if 1) percent African ancestry is associated with AD (tau and amyloid) or non-AD (e.g. Lewy bodies) specific pathologies and 2) if these pathologies mediate the effect of APOE4 and ABCA7 on cognitive decline relative to individuals of European ancestry.
